He received his education at Moscow Higher Military School, Frunze Military Academy, Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
He began his career as a commander of a motorized rifle division in the Odessa Military District. He served in various command and staff positions in the Central Asian, Turkestan, Volga, Far Eastern military districts, as well as the Staff for Coordinating Military Cooperation of Members of the Community of Independent States. In July 2006 he was appointed deputy commander of the Leningrad Military District.
He is married, and has a son.
