Alexis Gómez-Rosa was born on September 2, 1950 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in the family of Juan Francisco Gómez Rivera and Altagracia de la Rosa de Gómez. Came to the United States, in 1983.

Alexis attended Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo in 1970-74, and University of Massachusetts—Boston in 1983-85. He also received B.A. at State University of New York in 1989.
Alexis worked as a director poetry workshop at Casa de Teatro, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 1976-1978; then as an instructor in poetry at Boston/Dorchester Public Schools, Massachusetts in 1984-1985. He was a community liaison, Northern Manhattan Coalition for the Immigrants Rights, New York City in 1987-1989; and a teacher of Spanish, Caribbean Ednl. Center, New York City, since 1988. He also served as an adjunct Professor at Hunter College, New York City, since 1993, and at H. Lehman College, since 1993.

On February 12, 1976, Alexis married Bãrbara García, but they divorced. They have three children: Berenice, Yelidã, Adrián.
