David Eric Lunde was born on October 14, 1941, in Berkeley, California, United States, and was raised in Saudi Arabia. He is a son of John Peer Lunde, an engineer, and Alice Ann (Leslie) Lunde, a homemaker.
In 1963, David received Bachelor of Arts degree from Knox College. Later, he continued his education at the University of Iowa, graduating with Master of Fine Arts degree in 1967.
In 1967, David started his career as an instructor at the State University of New York at Fredonia, a post he held till 1969, when he was appointed an assistant professor at the same university. Lunde continued to hold this post until 1972.
Between 1972-1978, David served as an associate professor, still at the State University of New York at Fredonia. In 1978, he was promoted to the position of a professor of English.
Moreover, during his lifetime, Lunde served as an editor. From 1968 till 1971, he held a post of a managing editor of Drama and Theatre publication. Also, between 1970-1985, David worked as an editor and publisher at Basilisk Press.

David married Mary Lee Brannock in 1967. Some time later, in 1981, their marriage ended in divorce. In 1983, Lunde married his second wife, Marilyn C. Masiker, whom he divorced in 1996.
