In 1976 she got her Bachelor from State University of New York Empire State College and got her Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Buffalo.
She chaired the Department of Women"s Studies, at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her surname also appears as DeVeaux. She wrote for Essence magazine, from 1979 to 1991.
