Alfred Ainger was educated at University College School, King's College London and Trinity College, Cambridge.
Alfred Ainger was ordained deacon in 1860, and in 1863 he was ordained priest; in 1864 he became a reader at Temple Church in London and later a preacher there. Ainger's association with Temple Church continued for the rest of his life. In 1894 he was appointed Master of the Temple, and in 1887 canon of Bristol Cathedral. He was appointed honorary chaplain to Queen Victoria in 1895 and was made chaplain-in-ordinary to the Queen a year later; he also became chaplain to King Edward VII. He left numerous lectures, sermons, and essays.
