She was educated at Oxford University and Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts.
Hadfield replaced Phyllis Jones as librarian at Amen House for Oxford University Press. She was also co-ordinating editor of the first edition of The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (1941). Her first published work was What happens next (A novel), published by Falcon Press in 1950.
She produced an adaption of Sir Thomas Malory"s Le morte d"Arthur and a scholarly study of Hadfield died in Cirencester in 1989.
