In 1983 Alice received Bachelor of Arts at Bryn Mawr College. After that she earned Master of Education at Southern Connecticut State University in 1975. Finally, she got Bachelor of Arts in Art education at University of Southern Maine in 1985.
Alice Mead devoted her carrer mostly to writing. She also has worked as an art teacher in Connecticut and Maine in 1974 - 1992, and as a preschool teacher in Maine in 1980 - 1983. Moreover, Alice served as a board member for Project Co-Step for developmentally delayed preschoolers. During her carrer she was also active in efforts to aid children in Kosovo, Serbia.

In November 1983 Alice married a recreation director Larry Mead, with whom she has two sons: Jeffrey O’Hara and Michael O’Hara Mead.
