Alice Notley is an American writer and poet. She gained prominence as a member of the second generation of the New York School of poetry.

Background

Alice Notley was born on November 8, 1945 in Bisbee, Arizona, United States. She grew up in Needles, California. Notley wrote extensively of her childhood and early life in her book "Tell Me Again".

Education

She received a Bachelor of Arts from Barnard College in spring 1967. Notley also obtained from the University of Iowa her Master of Fine Arts in 1969.

Career

After her graduation, Notley spent periods of time in NYC and Buffalo. During the winter of 1970-1971, Notley lived on Long Island, and wrote her first book "165 Meeting House Lane (Twenty-Four Sonnets)". She is the author of a number of poetry and books.

Achievements

  • Notley received National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1980, Poetry Center award in 1982, G.E. Foundation award in 1983 and Fund for Poetry grant in 1987 and 1989.

    In 1999, Notley was both a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and a winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Poetry. In spring 2001, she received an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Poetry Society of America's Shelley Memorial Award. This period also marked an increase in scholarly interest in Notley's work.

Connections

She married Ted Berrigan on 1972, but he died in 1983. After his death, she married Douglas Oliver in 1988. Notley has two sons from the first marriage.
