Deshpande was born on September 25, 1970 in Dearborn, Michigan, United States; the daughter of Abhijit-Shridhar Deshpande and Shobhana-Hari (Karve) Deshpande.
Deshpande received a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology from the University of Pune (nowadays Savitribai Phule Pune University) in 1991. Four years later she earned her Master of Science degree in biomedical sciences from the University of New Mexico.
Deshpande began her career as an assistant laboratory technician at Bhasker Medical Clinic in 1992. The same year she was appointed a teaching assistant of biology department at New Mexico Institute of Mining Technology. In 2005, Alina became a senior scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Since 2016 she has been a group leader of Biosecurity and Public Health Division at the same laboratory.
Deshpande is known for her publications such as "Pharmacogenetics and flow cytometry: New applications in disease diagnostics and therapeutics", "Effectiveness of a Silane Coating Against Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion of an Alumina-Particle-Reinforced Aluminum 6061Matrix Composite" and others.
Deshpande is a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society for Cell Biology and International Society of Analytical Cytology.
On October 17, 1991 Alina Deshpande married Rajendra Uddhav Vaidya.
