Nowadays, he writes books full time, lectures and consults. Additionally, Beason is a contributor to periodicals, including the Amazing Science Fiction.
Beason has put his United States Air Force background and doctorate in physics to use in his science fiction books and technothrillers. He first began publishing in 1987, when his short story “The Man I’ll Never Be” appeared in Amazing Science Fiction. It was followed by the book-length adventures Return to Honor (1989) and Assault on Alpha Base (1990). The latter concerns a terrorist attack and takeover of the main nuclear stockpile in the United States. Strike Eagle, published in 1991, tells the story of a young Air Force lieutenant who must rescue the United States President-elect from a band of Philippine rebels holding him hostage.
Beason has teamed with Kevin J. Anderson, author of several bestselling Star Wars volumes, to write a handful of adventure novels. Lifeline tells the story of three space colonies after a nuclear war has destroyed the earth. Assemblers of Infinity describes the signaling of an invasion by an alien artifact. Ill Wind is the story of the unexpected and catastrophic environmental results of a genetically engineered organism made to clean up oil spills. In the near-future thriller Virtual Destruction, an FBI agent is asked to solve the murder of a man who has invented a virtual reality chamber.
Generally, Beason is the author of eighteen books and novels - nine novels with collaborator Kevin J. Anderson, and a novel with Ben Bova, as well as two non-fiction books.
Beason's fiction has appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies. His book Science and Technology Policy for the post-Cold War: A Case for Long-Term Research was awarded the National Defense University President's Strategic Vision Award.
The novel The Trinity Paradox, written with Beason's co-author Kevin Anderson's became the first work of fiction ever nominated for the American Physical Society's Forum Award, promoting the understanding of physics in society, it was also the first novel ever reviewed in Physics Today.
