Mr. Beigel began his work in the field of psychiatry after receiving his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He began conducting research at the Sleep Laboratory at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. By 1970, Mr. Beigel was offered the position of director at the University of Arizona’s Southern Arizona Mental Health Center. In 1971, his first book, Drug Misuse: A Psychiatric View of a Modern Dilemma, was published. Allan Beigel was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the President’s Commission on Mental Health in 1977 because of his work in the areas of drug and alcohol abuse and health care for the mentally ill.
