Edward Nersessian was born on November 28, 1944, in Tehran, Iran. He is a son of Khachatoor Nersessian, an entrepreneur, and Violette (Baghdassarian) Nersessian.
Nersessian attended Leeds College of Technology in 1964. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from Université Catholique de Louvain six years later. He also studied at Payne Whitney Clinic in New York Hospital in 1973, and at New York Psychoanalytic Institute in 1977.
Nersessian is a private practitioner of psychoanalysis and psychiatry. He works as a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Medical College of the Cornell University. He also held the position of Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute.
Nersessian is co-founder and first co-editor of the journal Neuropsychoanalysis, as well as co-editor of the Textbook of Psychoanalysis and of Controversies in Contemporary Psychoanalysis. He has written articles on diverse psychoanalytic subjects and his current interest is reassessing the fundamental tenets of the psychoanalytic theory.
Additionally, Nersessian is a co-founder of the Philoctetes Center, and the founder and current director of the Helix Center for Interdisciplinary Studies. Nersessian is a contributor to Psychoanalytic Quarterly, an academic journal of psychoanalysis.

1997Nersessian is a corresponding member of Société Psychanalytique de Paris. He was a president of the New York Psychoanalytic Society. Nersessian is also a member of the International Psycnoanalytic Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychoanalytic Association.
Nersessian married Mary Luallen on January 3, 1981. The couple has 3 children - Caroline, Gregory and Anand.
