Allan Cunningham was born at Keir, near Dalswinton, Dumfries, and Galloway on December 7, 1784. At the age of 11, Allan was apprenticed as a stonemason; but he continued to interest himself in literature. His father was a neighbor of Robert Burns, and Allan became a friend of the self-taught rural bard James Hogg, “the Ettrick Shepherd.”
At the age of 11, Allan was apprenticed as a stonemason; but he continued to interest himself in literature. In 1809 he met the publisher Robert Hartley Cromek, who was touring Scotland to collect folk songs, and supplied him with originals in a spurious antique disguise. Though probably not entirely deceived, Cromek published these Remains of Nithsdale and Galloway Song the following year. Cunningham was attracted by Cromek to London, where he worked first as parliamentary reporter and sculptor's assistant, then as secretary to the sculptor Sir Francis Chantrey. Meanwhile he continued writing, contributing to Blackwood's and the London Magazine. From songs, poems, short stories, and a verse drama he turned to romances and biography. Apart from a few songs, the only enduring works among his large output were his six-volume Lives of the Most Eminent British Painters, Sculptors, and Architects (1829 - 1833) and his weighty eight-volume edition of Burns (1834). In 1810 Cunningham went to London, where he worked as a parliamentary reporter and journalist till 1814, when he became clerk of the works in the studio of the sculptor, Francis Chantrey, a post he kept until Chantrey's death in 1841.

He was a member of the brilliant circle of writers that included Thomas De Quincey, Charles Lamb, William Hazlitt, John Keats, and Thomas Hood, who were contributors to the London Magazine in its heyday in the early 1820s.
Cunningham was married to Jean Walker, who had been servant in a house where he lived, and they had five sons and one daughter, all of whom rose to important positions, and inherited in some degree his literary gifts.
