(Carl Sharsmith served the US National Park System longer ...)
Carl Sharsmith served the US National Park System longer than any other Ranger-Naturalist, beginning in 1931 until his death in 1994. A nature guru with an uncommon ability to convey his love for natural things, he was instrumental in developing a unique program of hands-on instruction, influencing thousands. This book, composed of more than fifty reminiscences, is a tribute to him and to his philosophy of nature. A Chronology of his life is featured in this illustrated festschrift.

(The Tragedy of Tenaya is a novella about the displacement...)
The Tragedy of Tenaya is a novella about the displacement of the Yosemite Indians by the early pioneer settlers in the middle of the nineteenth century. Tenaya, last Chief of the Yosemitees was a strong person who tragically faced the inevitable decimation of his village population and its removal from the Yosemite region. This is fictionalized history, for the story is based on anthropological and historical data. Tenaya became a legend and this is his story.

(Mariposa's history is ancient, for its past extends at le...)
Mariposa's history is ancient, for its past extends at least 10,000 years, when the First People populated the land, lived in peace with unreconstructed nature, were overtaken by settlers between 1848 and 1850, then were decimated. While the Miwok 'Mariposa County' stretches back ten millenia, the settlers' not quite 150 years...This is not a history of Mariposa Town or County but rather an anthology of unpublished and published articles about the people, animals, trees, a creek, park rangers, horses, dogs, cats, chickens, gold, a farrier, and ranch entrances. This is about Mariposa Town, yes, but more about Mariposa County: Jerseydale, Cathey's Valley, Midpines, and Yosemite. The text includes a Selective, Annotated Bibliography on the History of Mariposa. Many photos.
