Alvin Coox studied at New York University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1945. After that, he studied at Harvard University. In 1946 he received a Master of Arts degree and in 1951 a Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Alvin Coox started his career as a teacher at Harvard University in 1948. In 1949 he started to work at Johns Hopkins University as senior historian, before working as an analyst for the elucidation of 15 years Air Force after they went to Japan. From 1964 to 1995, he taught at San Diego State University. He also became a director of Japanese Studies in 1985.
Alvin Coox wrote several books on the history of Japan, including Year of the Tiger, published in 1964, Japan: The Final Agony, Tojo, The Anatomy of a Small War, and a book he edited and translated titled Kogun: The Japanese Army in the Pacific War.
Alvin Coox was known as an American military historian and writer, who was famous for his award-winning book, Nomonhan: Japan Against Russia.
Coox was awarded research grants from the Rockefeller Foundation in the early 1960s, and in 1992 was given the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government for his role in aiding the improvement of Japan-U.S. relations.
