Alberts was born on October 13, 1960 in San Francisco, California, United States; the daughter of Walter Watson Alberts and Marilyn Janice (West) Alberts.
Alberts received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1982. Seven years later she earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California at San Diego.
Alberts began her career as a teaching assistant at the University of California in 1983. Six years later she took a position of a postdoctoral fellow at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University. Since 1991 Allison has been a research fellow at Zoological Society of San Diego (nowadays San Diego Zoo Global)
Also she served as an associate physiologist at Zoological Society of San Diego from 1993 to 1994. Since 1994 Alberts has worked as a comparative physiologist at the same society and an adjunct assistant professor of biology at San Diego State University.
Alberts is a member of Animal Behavior Society, American Society of Zoologists, International Society of Chemical Ecology, Society for Conservation Biology, American Society of Ichthyologists & Herpetologists and American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums.
On April 26, 1992 Allison Alberts married Michael Benton Worley.
