In 1948, after serving in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, Baum began working as a general manager for Europe and Paris, France, and as a Berlin bureau chief for the International News Photo Service, the positions he held till 1950, when he was made a general manager at the United Press Photos, serving in Berlin and Frankfürt. Baum remained at the company until 1952.
In 1953, after two years at the United Press Photos in Germany, Allyn joined the staff of The American Daily magazine in London as a photo editor, a position he held until 1954.
In 1957, Baum returned to the United States as an associate editor at Coronet magazine in New York City and as a staff photographer for The New York Times. His work at the Times spanned a decade. Then, in 1967, Allyn was appointed a senior editor of Medical Economics magazine in Oradell, New Jersey, where he worked until his retirement in 1990.
Allyn Zelton Baum was a renowned American photographer, journalist, editor and author, who worked as a staff photographer for The New York Times. His photography is included in permanent collections at the Eastman House, Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Also, during his lifetime, Baum received several awards, including the New York Times Public's Award and Jesse Neal Award.
