In 1971, Brandstetter was appointed professor at the University of Saarland in Saarbrücken and was a visiting professor at the University of Salzburg in the winter semester 1971-72. In 1974, Brandstätter was appointed a university professor of German language and literature at the University of Klagenfurt, a position he held until 2007.
