Jonathan Smith began his career at Texas A&M University, College Station, as a visiting assistant professor in 1989. In 1991, he became an assistant professor. Six years later, Smith was appointed as an associate professor of geography. Currently, he is a professor of geography at the same university. Jonathan was also a lecturer at the State University of New York College at Geneseo, St. Lawrence University, State University of New York at Brockport, Louisiana State University and the University of Kentucky.
Smith published articles on geographers' use of metaphor, irony and rhetoric, on the development of geographical concepts such as region, place and environmental ethics, and on the geographical imagination in 17th century England and the 19th century United States. He has also published articles on landscape symbolism, the role of technology in geographical change and the geographical conditions of contemporary identity. Jonathan has also co-edited seven books.
Jonathan teaches a range of undergraduate and graduate courses on cultural geography, cultural landscapes and the history and nature of geography. Besides, he is a co-editor of the journal Ethics, Place and Environment.
Jonathan Mark Smith is a member of the American Association of Geographers and Society for Philosophy and Geography.
