Career
He resided in Brooklyn, New York beginning in 1837. He was a native of New Jersey, living there prior to 1837. His tenure at the Customs House in New York City lasted thirty-five years.
Smith was secretary of the Republican general committee for seven years.
He served as a deputy Grand Master (order) in New York and was earlier a Grand Master in New Jersey. He lived to be eighty-two before dying in 1897 at his home on Clinton Street, in Brooklyn.
He is buried in Plainfield, New Jersey.
