Admitted to Iowa bar, 1866. Appointed judge 1st Judicial District, Iowa, 1895. At end of term went to Binghamton, New York, to take charge of corporate interests as legal counsel.

President Iowa State Bar Association, 1895-1896. Iowa member general council American Bar Association, 1894-1897, Chairman of Commission judicial administration and remedial procedure, 1899-1905, member commission on uniform state laws. Delegate Universal Congress Lawyers and Jurists, St. Louis, 1904.
