A land in tumult, poverty and chaos. Most people suffer quietly. A few rebel. Some fight for a better world. Some for themselves. Some don’t give a damn. Raavan. Fathered by one of the most illustrious sages of the time. Blessed by the Gods with talents beyond all. Cursed by fate to be tested to the extremes. A formidable teenage pirate, he is filled with equal parts courage, cruelty and fearsome resolve. A resolve to be a giant among men, to conquer, plunder, and seize the greatness that he thinks is his right. A man of contrasts, of brutal violence and scholarly knowledge.
Amish Tripathi is an Indian author and vovelist. He is known for his novels The Immortals of Meluha, The Secret of the Nagas and The Oath of the Vayuputras. Tripathi's debut work The Immortals of Meluha was a surprise bestseller, breaking into the top seller charts within a week of its launch. Forbes India has ranked him #85 in the 2012 Celebrity 100 list.
Background
Amish Tripathi was born on October 18, 1974, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, and grew up near Rourkela, Odisha. His grandfather was a Pandit and a teacher at Banaras Hindu University. He belonged to a middle-class family, who encouraged the religious and worldly learning.
Education
Tripathi graduated from the St. Xavier's College, Mumbai and studied at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. Later he received an honorary Doctorate degree from the Jharkhand Rai University for outstanding contribution to Art and Literature.
Although Tripathi originally wanted to be a historian, he initially chose a career in finance because he couldn't afford the former. He worked for 14 years in the financial services industry, in companies such as Standard Chartered, DBS Bank and IDBI Federal Life Insurance, before starting his writing career.
His writing career began with a philosophical debate inspired by an interesting piece of knowledge he and his family discovered on a television show. They found out that there is a contradiction in the Indian and Persian religious myths as the Indian gods were considered devas and demons asuras. Whereas, the pre-Islamic Zoroastrian Persian myth had it reserved; ahuras were their gods and demons daivas. The clash of the concept of good and evil in these mythologies stimulated his interest to determine what exactly is evil. At the encouragement of his family, he put down the philosophical thesis on paper. Shortly, the thesis was transformed into an adventure story of a Hindu god Shiva. It took Tripathi nearly five years to finish the book.
The Immortals of Meluha, Tripathi's first novel, was published in February 2010. It is the first book in the Shiva Trilogy. The second book in the series, The Secret of the Nagas, was released on 12 August 2011. The third installment, titled The Oath of the Vayuputras, was released on 27 February 2013. The trilogy is a fantasy re-imagining of the Indian deity Shiva's life and adventures.
The Immortals of Meluha and The Secret of the Nagas, the first two novels by Tripathi, have been commercial successes. Amish's books have sold a million copies in the span of two years with a gross retail sale of Rs 22 crores. The third installment, titled The Oath of the Vayuputras, was released on 27 February 2013. With The Oath of Vayuputras selling more than 400,000 copies even before its release, the trilogy has become a success. The Shiva Trilogy has become the fastest selling book series in the history of Indian publishing, with 1.5 million copies in print.
In the Indian market where large sales volumes of books are rare, Tripathi's books have been enormously successful. Tripathi's marketing skills and strategies have been widely credited for the success of his novels.
Weeks before The Immortals of Meluha hit the bookshops, Tripathi printed sample copies of the first chapter and persuaded bookshops and chains to give them away free to anyone who approached the cash counter, creating a buzz. It was an unprecedented move and gave the book very high visibility considering that at that time, Tripathi was an unknown author. He also made presentations to big retail chains, visited smaller retailers, met local distributors and regularly sent email updates to various stakeholders. Tripathi targeted social media websites for promoting his debut novel, and made a trailer film with a background score reportedly by Taufiq Qureshi and uploaded it on YouTube.

Religion
All of Tripathi's books (released and planned) are on religious topics since he is a devoted worshiper of Lord Shiva. Amish had turned into an atheist in his youth but returned to faith while writing his first book. His grandfather was a Sanskrit scholar and a Pandit in Benares. Tripathi says that he gathered most of his knowledge of Hindu theology and religion from his grandfather and his very religious parents. He believes that religiosity and liberalism go hand-in-hand in India.
Views
Amish Tripathi is passionate about history, mythology, and philosophy, finding beauty and meaning in all world religions.
Quotations:
“The opposite of love is not hate, its apathy, when u simply don't bother about that person!”
“Whether a man is a legend or not is decided by history, not fortune tellers.”
“A person's ethics and character are not tested in good times. It is only in bad times that a person shows how steadfast he is to his dharma.”
“While money is certainly not the most important thing in my life, it has enabled me to live off my books and given me the freedom to quit my day job and spend more time with my writing and my family. But if your purpose is to make money, then, boss, writing is the wrong profession. Choose banking or FMCG; there everyone makes money.”
"It’s a fallacy to think that a good book sells itself. I can give you a long list of books that I think should have been bestsellers but nobody’s heard of them. My management background along with marketing experience helped me devise effective strategies for promoting my book."
