Background

Ana de Armas was born on April 30, 1988, in Santa Cruz del Norte, Cuba, to Ana and Ramón de Armas. Her mother worked in human resources, and her father was a teacher. Ana was raised in Havana alongside her brother.

On her mother’s side, she has grandparents from Palencia and León in Spain, she gained Spanish citizenship through them.

Education

Ana de Armas was just 12 years old when she decided to become an actress. In order to learn the craft professionally, she attended the National Theater School of Cuba for four years.

Career

Ana de Armas landed her first film role two years later, starring in Una rosa de Francia (2006) directed by Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón. She then starred in two films in 2007: Madrigal directed by Fernando Pérez and El edén Perdido directed by Manuel Estudillo.

She moved to Spain at the age of 18 in the hope of getting more opportunities. Her major break came when she was cast in the leading role of Carolina Leal in the Antena 3 drama-thriller TV series El Internado. She played that role for six seasons.

She later continued her career momentum in the film Mentiras y gordas (2009), the TV series Hispania, la leyenda (2010 to 2012) and the movie Blind Alley (2011).

Ana moved to Los Angeles in 2014 in order to transition into a Hollywood actress. Immediately after she moved, she was roped in the 2015 American erotic thriller-horror film Knock Knock, in which she played the starring role of Bel, starring opposite Keanu Reeves. By 2016, the young actress was just starting to break through into mainstream Hollywood - she again starred with Keanu Reeves in the action thriller Exposed. Also in 2016, her prominent Hollywood project was the biopic of the Panamanian former professional boxer Roberto Durán, Hands of Stone.' Ana played Felicidad Iglesias, the mother of Roberto's five children.

Ana also appeared in the crime dramedy War Dogs(2016), starring with Miles Teller and Jonah Hill. She played Iz, girlfriend of the former arms dealer, musician, inventor and entrepreneur, David Packouz, played by Miles Teller.

After appearing in a critically acclaimed role in the 2017 action thriller, Overdrive, Ana cemented her position in Hollywood with the neo-noir science fiction Blade Runner 2049. In it, she played a holographic (virtual) character named Joi who was the girlfriend of the blade runner, played by Ryan Gosling. For her performance, she received a 'Saturn Award' nomination in the best-supporting actress category. The movie won two Academy Awards.

Lately, Ana was involved in several movie projects, including the British comedy Yesterday, the action crime thriller The Informer, the mystery crime movie Knives Out, and the crime drama The Night Clerk. All of these movies were scheduled to be released in 2019. It was also announced that she has joined the cast of the upcoming James Bond film, Bond 25 (2020). She will also feature in the upcoming drama Wasp Network and Entering Red, a short film directed by Matteo Garrone.

Recently it was announced that she will play the lead role of Marilyn Monroe in an upcoming drama film written and directed by Andrew Dominik and based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates. The movie will follow a fictionalized take on the life of Marilyn Monroe.

She's hoping to follow in the footsteps of Hollywood's biggest actresses. Ana has said she wants to have careers like those of Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, Meryl Streep, and Penélope Cruz, naming them alongside her favorite actresses.

Ana de Armas and Spanish actor and model, Marc Clotet started dating in June 2010 and the two tied the knot in July 2011. But, the couple separated in February 2013 and filed for divorce which was finalized later in the year.

De Armas has already worked twice with Keanu Reeves. In 2015, they worked together on Knock Knock, a horror movie directed and produced by Eli Roth. They worked together again on Exposed, a 2016 thriller originally titled Daughter of God.

Unfortunately, neither of these movies earned big audiences. Exposed was dumped through video on demand and Knock Knock grossed just $36,336 in a limited theatrical release.

“It was my first film in English,” de Armas told Hello Magazine about working on Knock Knock. “I had to work really hard on it, and Keanu adapted so well, he was so patient with me. He is a very humble person - the sort of person that you meet and want to stay friends with forever.”
