Graduated from the Moscow Stroganov Art School, 1873. Pupil of the artist P. Isakov.
Worked as a stage designer for the Imperial Moscow Theatres. Assistant to K. Valts at the Bolshoi Theatre. Travelled all over Russia and Europe.
From 1888, chief stage designer at the Moscow Malyi Theatre. In the 1880-1890s, was very much in demand for ballet productions. Experimented with stage lighting.
One of his best works was The Sleeping Beauty, 1899, for the Bolshoi Theatre.
