Graduated from Moscow University in law, 1865.
Judge, later senator of the criminal cassation department of the Senate. Appointed member of the State Council, 1906. Was the presiding judge at the trial of the revolutionary Vera Zasulich.
After this case, in 1872, became an instant celebrity with the liberal intelligentsia. His pleas and summing-ups made him one of the best-known judges in Russia. After the October Revolution 1917, professor of law at Petrograd University, 1918-1922.
In his old age turned to writing. His memoirs, Na Zhiznennom Puri, 5 vol., give a panorama of the cultural scene in Russia during the 60 years of his activity. Knew many celebrated figures in literature and the arts.
