One of the first to mechanize his farms in the Baltic Provinces of Russia with the latest equipment. Took partin World War I as an officer of the Chevalier Guarde (Horse Guards). Awarded the British Military Cross for outstanding bravery in the East Prussian campaign.
Founder and 1st commander of a Russian Free Corps in the former Baltic Provinces of Russia. Participated in the capture of Riga in May 1919. Severely wounded and retired from further military activity.
