Anatoly Mikhailovich Khazanov was born on 13 December in 1937 in Moscow City, Russian Federation.
Khazanov attended Moscow State University, where he received an Master of Arts in 1960. He earned a Doctor of Philisophy degree in 1966 and Doctor of Science in 1976 from the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Russian Academy of Sciences).
Anatoly M. Khazanov started his professional career as an archaeologist specializing in the nomadic cultures of the Early Iron Age. In the second half of the 1960s he shifted to socio-cultural anthropology. He emigrated in 1985 from the Soviet Union. In 1990 he became Professor of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Khazanov has written 6 monographs and around 200 articles. At the moment he is the Ernest Gellner Professor of Anthropology (Emeritus).
He has been a member of the International Union of Anthropology and Ethnological Sciences, World Union of Jewish Studies, Permanent International Altaistic Conference, Association for Central Asian Studies, Association for the Study of Nationalities, American Anthropological Association, Mongolia Society, Israeli Anthropological Association (member of executive board, 1987-1988), Israeli Association of Slavic and East European Studies, Central Asian Studies Association (England), British Academy (fellow), Genghiz Khan Society (Mongolia; honorary member).
He married on November 5, 1963. His wife’s name is Irina. The couple has a child Yaakov.
