Svetlana Aleksandrovna worked in the Institute of Archaeology Russian Academy of Sciences (former the Institute of Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR). At the beginning (1952) she was a researcher. Since 1974, she worked as head of the department of Slavic-Russian archeology. In 1993-2001, she became head of the group of medieval archeology of the Eurasian steppes. Since 2001, she was scientific consultant in the Institute of Archaeology Russian Academy of Sciences, at the same time in 1988-1995 chief editor of the magazine "Soviet archeology" (since 1992, "Russian archeology").
