He graduated from the chemical department of the Voronezh State University (1934).
Since 1934 worked at the Voronezh State University as an assistant, assistant professor, professor of the department of organic chemistry. In 1941-1944 Professor of the Department of Chemistry, Voronezh Aviation Institute. Since 1945 Professor of the Leningrad Institute of Aviation Instrumentation, since 1951 Professor, Head of the Department of Organic Chemistry, Leningrad Institute of Technology named after Leningrad City Council (Lensovet).
His main works are devoted to the chemistry of unsaturated compounds, telomerization. Petrov's defense of the doctoral dissertation took place at Voronezh State University on the eve of World War II and became a major event in the scientific life of Voronezh.
