Background
After study in Rome he settled in 1768 at Paris, where he successfully produced some fifty operas. Gretry was not a learned composer; his harmonies were weak and he had little knowledge of instrumentation and counterpoint. He was particularly successful in composing music which emphasized the dramatic situations and interpreted the words of the characters.
