Antoniou was born on March 3, 1938 in Yerolakkos, Cyprus; the son of Antonios and Eleni (Costi Coufou) Hadgisavva. He immigrated to Canada in 1969.
Antoniou received a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the University of London in 1963. Three years later he earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the same university.
Antoniou began his career as a teacher at Concordia University in 1970. Thirteen years later he took a position of a founding chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria and had held the position for seven years. In addition, from 1983 Andreas was a professor at that university. Nowadays he is a professor emeritus at the University of Victoria.
Also Antoniou served as an associate editor and after that the chief editor for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Transactions on Circuits and Systems from 1983 to 1987. In 2003, he became a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Signal Processing and the Circuits and Systems and had held the position for a year and again in 2006-2007. In addition, Andreas was a general chairman of the 2004 International Symposium on Circuits and Systems.
Andreas Antoniou was awarded the CAS Golden Jubilee Medal by the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society in recognition of outstanding achievements in the area of circuits and systems, the B.C. Science Council Chairman’s Award for Career Achievement for 2000, the Doctor Honoris Causa degree by the Metsovio National Technical University of Athens, Greece in 2002, the 2005 IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Technical Achievements Award, the 2008 IEEE Canada Outstanding Engineering Educator Silver Medal, and the 2009 IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Education Award. Recently, he was awarded the Craigdarroch Gold Medal for Career Achievement by the University of Victoria.

On March 7, 1964 Andreas Antoniou married Rosemary C. Kennedy. They have four children.
