Philip Dearden attended the University of Birmingham, where he got his honorary B.A. degree in 1973, and M.Sc., in 1975, from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. In 1978, Philip got Ph.D., from the University of Victoria.
Philip Dearden is a Full Professor at the Department of Geography, University of Victoria. His field is conservation with main interests in protected areas and particularly marine protected areas. Most of his work is in the tropics with a regional specialisation in SE Asia. He maintains active research interests in Thailand, Myanmar and the Philippines with a focus on community-engaged and incentive-based conservation. Current projects include whale shark tourism, incorporating equity into systematic conservation planning and MPA policy development.
Dearden married Jittiya on November 30, 1991. They have two daughters, Kathleen Lucy, Theresa Jane.
