Doelle was born on December 23, 1956 in Hamburg, Germany; the son of Gerhard and Ursula Doelle.

Doelle received a diploma in chemistry from the University of Dusseldorf (nowadays Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf) in 1984. Four years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biophysics Chemistry from the University of Basel.
Doelle began his career as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Karlsruhe (nowadays Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) in 1988. Two years later he took a position of an assistant professor at the University of Technology (nowadays RWTH Aachen University). In 1996, Andreas became a lecturer in Germany and a senior lecturer in Germany in 1998 at the same university. Since 2001 he has been a professor in Germany at RWTH Aachen University.
Doelle is a member of the European Molecular Liquids Group, German Society of Chemistry and German Society of Physical Chemistry.
Andreas Doelle is married to Ulrike Petz. They have a daughter.
