He graduated summa cum laude from the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, where he studied from 1922 to 1925.
A freelance photographer and writer since 1963, Feininger was a staff photographer for Life magazine (1943-62). He worked for Black Star Picture Agency (1940-41) and was an architect in Germany (1929-31). Before that he was a cabinetmaker's apprentice. It was in Sweden in 1933 that Feininger decided to devote himself completely to photography.
Feininger won ASMP's Robert Leavitt Award in 1966. He also won medals from Fotografiska Foreningen, Stockholm, Sweden, in 1938 and 1939.
"I am known for my documentary approach,'' he says, "clarity of presentation being of the greatest importance to me."
