Elected to the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party on the eve of the October Revolution 1917. Commissar of all Petrograd railway stations during the take-over in 1917. Leftwing communist, 1918.
During the Civil War, held several high administrative positions in the Ukraine, 1918-1919. Took part in the suppression of the Kronstadt sailors revolt, 1921. Head of the Agitprop of the Central Committee, 1922-1923.
At first a Trotskyite, later supported Stalin. After Trotsky’s defeat, appointed head of the political administration of the Red Army, 1924-1929, replacing Antonov-Ovseenko. Secretary of the Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party, 1925.
Minister of Education of RSFSR, replacing Lunacharskii, 1929-1937, and responsible for the school reforms of the 1930s. Arrested, died in the Gulag camps. Rehabilitated under Khrushchev.
