Andrei Ryabushkin was born on October 29, 1861 in the village Stanichnaya sloboda, Borisoglebskiy uezd, Tambov Governorate (present-day Tambov oblast, Russian Federation). He was the son of an icon painter.
During the period from 1875 to 1882, Andrei Ryabushkin studied at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (present-day Moscow Architectural Institute) under Vasily Perov and Illarion Pryanishnikov. In 1882, he enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Arts (present-day Russian Academy of Arts), graduating in 1890. Pavel Chistyakov was his mentor.
Also, after graduation from the Academy, Ryabushkin received a stipend for travel and studies abroad from Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia for his work "Descent from the Cross". Instead of going to Italy or Paris, Ryabushkin chose to make a tour to ancient Russian towns (Novgorod, Kiev, Moscow, Uglich, Yaroslavl). There, he studied old architecture, items of folk crafts, old weapons, fabrics, tapestries, embroidery and icons.
In 1890, 1892 and 1894, Andrei Ryabushkin took part in Peredvizhniki exhibitions, but later broke with the movement.
In the 1890s, he lived and worked in the estate of his friend V. F. Tymenev in town of Lyuban (Novgorod Governorate, now Leningrad oblast). In 1901, the painter built a studio in a village of Didvino close to Lubvino and the estate of his friend I. Belyaev.
Andrei Ryabushkin also worked on frescoes for Saint Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod and mosaics for the Church of the Savior on Blood in Saint Petersburg. There are 24 of his mosaics on the walls of Church of the Savior on Blood (17 inside and seven outside).
During the last years of his life, Ryabushkin created illustrations for Russian epics, referring to village theme.
