Advisor to the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1998). Specialist in the field of the theory of functions and approximation theory. A student of S. N. Mergelyan.
Andrey Gonchar received the Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences degree in 1964.
In 1999 he was awarded the title of "Honored Professor of Moscow University".
November 26, 1974, was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of Mathematics, December 23, 1987 - Academician of the Department of Mathematics.
Since 1998, he was chairman of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences "Scientific telecommunications and information infrastructure". He was a member of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation, the Council of the Federal Targeted Program "State Support for the Integration of Higher Education and Fundamental Science for 1997-2000", the Council for the President of the Russian Federation for Science and High Technologies (2001-2012).
He was an invited speaker at the Mathematical Congresses in Moscow (USSR) in 1966 and in Berkeley (USA) in 1986. The scientific result of A. A. Gonchar and E. A. Rakhmanov was noted in 1987 among the best results of the year in the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.
