Andrew R. Gottlieb was born on August 17, 1952, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Seymour E. Gottlieb, an optometrist, and Lillian B. Gottlieb, a bookkeeper.
In 1974, Gottlieb received a Bachelor of Music from Temple University. In 1982, he also received a Master of Social Work from Yeshiva University and a Ph.D. from New York University in 1999.
Gottlieb started his career as a social worker at the Episcopal Mission Society. Later, he became a director of South Bronx Services to Older People. In the Department of Probation, Andrew worked as a probation officer, then, he was a case planner at Children's Aid Society, where he also worked as a supervisor, social worker and assistant site director and unit supervisor.
Gottlieb also worked as a social worker and intake coordinator and supervisor at Bleuler Psychotherapy Center. At Hudson Guild Mental Health Services, he held the position of clinical supervisor and senior psychiatric social worker. Andrew also was a clinical supervisor and intake coordinator at Partnership with Children, and clinical supervisor at Corona-Elmhurst Guidance Center. From 1985 to 1988, Gottlieb was a staff therapist at Long Island Consultation Center, as well as at Institute for Human Identity, from 1988 to 1991, and at Washington Square Institute for Psychotherapy and Mental Health from 1993 to 1999. Since 1989, Gottlieb has been a psychotherapist in private practice.
Gottlieb has published six books, as well as edited the Journal of GLBT Family Studies.

2006Gottlieb specializes in working individually with LGBTQ+ young people. While acquiring deeper insight into what makes them tick, putting that knowledge to work is key. Setting realistic, attainable goals is an indispensable part of the process. He uses psychoanalytic and relational theories to inform his work and views the therapeutic relationship as the cornerstone of treatment.
Gottlieb is a member of the National Association of Social Work.
