(Nicaragua's Atlantic coast is home to the most dangerous ...)
Nicaragua's Atlantic coast is home to the most dangerous of fish, the bull shark, a lethal predator with a fearsome appetite and the only shark, that swims in inland waters. Braving Nicaragua's hurricane-torn wilderness of mangrove swamps and brackish lagoons, Edward Marriott joins the last surviving shark fishermen - a fierce ethnic brew of black Caribs, Nicaraguan Indians and the descants of seventeenth-century English pirates - to sail in a dugout canoe and fish for shark with a handline. As Marriott charts the life of the bull shark, its migrations, its voracious feeding patterns and the treasures it offers - oil for vitamins, hide for leather and fins for soup - he reveals lives, spent in fear and awe, in the shadow of a monster, that can sniff fresh blood a mile away.

(Plague. The very word carries an unholy resonance. No oth...)
Plague. The very word carries an unholy resonance. No other disease can claim its apocalyptic or mythological power. It can lie dormant for centuries, only to resurface with ferocious, nation-killing force. Here, with the high drama of a great adventure tale, Edward Marriott unravels the story of this lethal disease: the historic battle to identify its source, the devastating effects of pandemics and the prospects for the next outbreak.

broadcaster psychotherapist scientist author journalist
Edward Marriott was born in 1966 in the United Kingdom.
In 1985, Marriott entered Durham University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Literature in 1988.
Edward trained in psychoanalysis at the Institute of Psychoanalysis in London. Prior to this, he trained in psychotherapy at WPF Therapy (Westminster Pastoral Foundation). Edward also trained as a psychoanalyst at the British Psychoanalytical Society, the oldest and arguably most respected psychoanalytic training institution in the world.
Edward Marriott is a psychotherapist, writer and member of the clinic staff of the Institute of Psychoanalysis. Also, he works in private practice and as a consultant to organisations, helping diagnose difficulties and co-design solutions, that help teams work better together. Besides, Edward has experience of working as a psychotherapist in the National Health Service. Moreover, Edward has worked for the Arts Council initiative Creative Partnerships, which aims to encourage a climate of creativity in schools.
Edward is widely published as a journalist, book reviewer and interviewer for all major British newspapers. In addition, he is an experienced radio and television broadcaster - with BBC Radio 4 documentaries, including My Father the Mountain (1995) and The Mystery of the Affray (1999), and a play, The Captured Enemy (2006).
In 1993, Edward left England with a professional crew, determined to discover if the Liawep people of New Guinea were in fact a so-called lost tribe of human beings, living in primitive conditions, out of touch with the modern world. The results of this quest are chronicled in Marriott's book, The Lost Tribe: A Harrowing Passage into New Guinea's Heart of Darkness (1996), a work, that has been called a combination travel book and a tale of high adventure. The Papua New Guinea government was opposed to his investigations, so Marriott had to assemble his own crew and venture into the jungle without obtaining official and legal permission. Without a background in anthropology or any experience in jungle adventure, Marriott, a freelance writer at the time, set out, motivated by a strong curiosity and a desire to have the tribe's story published in book form.
Several years later, Marriott pushed off on a new adventure. He searched the Atlantic coastline of Nicaragua, up the San Juan River to Lake Nicaragua, following the migration of freshwater bull sharks, referred to as the most willful and aggressive of all tropical sharks. Edward's book, Savage Shore: Life and Death with Nicaragua's Last Shark Hunters, was published in 2000. One of his most recent books, Claude and Madeleine: A True Story of War, Espionage and Passion, came out in 2005. In recent years, his writing has focused on areas, relating to psychoanalysis.

2003Edward Marriott's work is rooted in the conviction, that the unconscious exerts a powerful force on people's everyday lives and actions, and that much depression or other psychological difficulties stem from feelings, that may be beyond their immediate understanding. Psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy aim at understanding these forces with the aim of relieving distress and have a powerful evidence base.
Edward Marriott is a full member of the British Psychoanalytical Society and the International Psychoanalytic Association.
Edward Marriott is married and has two sons.
