He contested the 1938 in the Raglan electorate against the incumbent, Labour"s Lee Martin, but was unsuccessful. He represented the Hauraki electorate from a 1942 by-election, caused by the death of John Manchester Allen, to 1954, when he retired. He was senior whip from 1950 to 1954.
He was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1955.

He was a member of the 9th New Zealand contingent (1902) to the Boer War.
