Career
With Department Agriculture since 1929, last assignment Northern Utilization Research, and Development Division, Fermentation Secretary, United States Department of Agriculture, Peoria, Illinois, research physiology of fungi. Mold fermentations; gluconic, lactic, kojic, glauconic, citric and itaconic acids from glucose. Penicillin. Devised methods for producing substantial increase in yields of penicillin, making large scale production possible.
Discovered methanol process for submerged mold fermentation of crude carbohydrates to citric acid.
Improved fermentation of glucose and Molasses to fumanic acid. Lasker group award, 1946.
