Anna Akhmanova

She studied biochemistry and molecular biology at Moscow State University. Her thesis was completed in Alexander Mankin’s laboratory where she researched halophilic archaebacteria.
Career
She is best known for her research regarding microtubules and their plus-end stabilizing proteins, or TIPs. She continued her studies in the Netherlands, obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy from Radboud University Nijmegen in 1997. She then started working as postdoc at Nijmegen and the Erasmus Military Cross. In 2011 she became professor of Cell Biology at Utrecht University.
Her research, amongst other subjects, focuses on the cytoskeleton.

Achievements

Akhmanova received the ALW Vernieuwingsimpuls VIDI (2001) and VICI awards (2007). In 2013, Akhmanova together with Marileen Dogterom received a European Research Council Synergy grant of 7.1 million euro. The grant was given for research on cell division and cell movement. Akhmanova was elected a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015.
