In the 1870s, studied at Zurich University and became close to the Bakunist narodniks. Active in Russia in the revolutionary movement, 1873-1877, under her married name Makarevich. Fled to Paris, 1877. Expelled for organizing a local section of the Marxist International.
Moved to Italy, where she spent the rest of her life. Became one of the founders of the Italian Socialist Party, 1892, and later one of its leaders on the right wing of the party.
