Liebelt received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Maryland College (nowadays McDaniel College) in 1948. Seven years later she earned her Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. In 1960, she was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Baylor College of Medicine.
Liebelt began her career as a biologist at National Cancer Institute in 1949 and held it for three years. In 1954, she took a position of research assistant and associate professor of anatomy at Baylor College of Medicine. Then in 1971, Annabel was appointed an associate professor of cell and molecular biology at Medical College of Georgia.
Also she served as a professor of anatomy at the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (nowadays Northeast Ohio Medical University) from 1974 to 1986. In 1979, she became Chairman of the Microscopic Anatomy Department at the same university, where she worked until 1982. In 1987 Liebelt became an expert and guest researcher at the Registry of Experimental Cancers at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institute of Health.
Liebelt volunteered in numerous capacities with Asbury Methodist Village School of Continuing Education, Asbury Villas, Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church, Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), AAUW (American Association of University Women), NARFE (National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association).
Liebelt was a member of American Association of Anatomy, American Association for Cancer Research, International Academy of Pathology, American Association for Experimental Pathologists, Federal American Society of Experimental Biology, American Association Laboratory of Animal Science, New York Academy of Sciences, Society for Toxicological Pathologists, Association Women in Science and Sigma Xi.
Liebelt was married. She has 4 children and 9 grandchildren.
