Anne-Louis Girodet was born on January 29, 1767 in Montargis, France. He lost his parents in his early years and was adopted by his guardian, M. Trioson. In 1812, Girodet took the surname Trioson.
Initially, Anne-Louis studied architecture and pursued a military career. Some time later, he decided to become a painter and began to study art under the guidance of Jacques-Louis David at his school. In 1789, Girodet won the Prix de Rome for his work "Joseph Recognized by His Brothers", which shows the influence of David’s Neoclassicism.
From 1789 to 1793, Anne-Louis lived in Rome, where he executed his "Hippocrate refusant les presents d'Artaxerxes" and "Endymion-dormant" — the work, which was hailed with acclamation at the Salon of 1793. Upon his return to France, the painter produced many portraits, including those of members of the Bonaparte family.
In 1806, Girodet exhibited his work "Scène du déluge", for which he received the decennial prize. This success was followed up in 1808 by the production of the "Reddition de Vienne" and "Atala au Tombeau" — the works, which went far to deserve its immense popularity by a successful choice of a subject and remarkable freedom from the theatricality of Girodet's usual manner, which, however, soon came to the front again in his "Revolte de Gaire" (1810).
After 1810, Anne-Louis made only few paintings for the reason, that he devoted almost all his time to the illustration of the works of such Ancient Greek poets, as Anacreon, Sappho, Virgil and others. In his later years, Girodet wrote poetry about painting and essays on aesthetics.
