Anne Hobson Freeman was born on March 19, 1934 in Richmond, Virginia, United States. Daughter of Joseph Reid Anderson and Mary Douthat (Marshall) Hobson.
Anne received a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College in 1956. The she was a postgraduate at London University from 1956 until 1957. In 1973 she earned a Master of Art from the University of Virginia.
Anne has been fiction writer since 1956. Freeman also worked as a reporter of the International News Service, Eastern Europe in 1957. She was an editor at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond from 1959 until 1963. Freeman served as a lecturer at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville from 1973 until 1988. She was also chairman of the advisory committee of Bryn Mawr Bulletin, Pennsylvania between 1978 and 1981. From 1984 until 1988 she worked at Hunton & Williams (law firm) in Richmond as a firm historian.

Anne was a member of the board of directors of Virginia History Society (1984-1990), a member of Virginia Commission Humanities & Public Policy (1985-1989), National Council Friends Kennedy Center in Washington (1983-1985), Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond (1994-2001). Freeman was an advisory board member of the American Civil War Center of Historic Tredegar (2001-2007), a member of Richmond Area Democratic Women’s Club, Country of Virginia Club, Ellen Glasgow Society,
Anne married George Clemon Freeman Jr. on December 6, 1958 and has 3 children: Anne Colston McEvoy, George Clemon, Joseph Reid Anderson.
