Morimoto received from the International Christian University, Division of Humanities, his B.A. in 1979. Then he obtained from Tokyo Union Theological Seminary a Th.M. (Systematic Theology) in 1982. In 1991 he received from Princeton Theological Seminary his Ph.D. (Systematic Theology).
Morimoto began his career as an Associate Pastor at the United Church of Christ in Japan from 1982 until 1986. Then he became ordained to Ministry (United Church of Christ in Japan) in 1985. From 1991 till 2002 he worked as university minister at the International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan. Between 1997 and 2001 he was an associate professor of the Division of Humanities at the International Christian University. Currently, he is a Professor of the Department of Humanities (Philosophy and Religion) at the International Christian University (since 2001) and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the International Christian University (since 2012).
He has been a member of Japan Society of Christian Studies, American Academy of Religion.
He married Eriko on February 10, 1980. They have 2 children: Shoko, Akiko.
