Anthony Martin Branch moved to Huntsville, Texas, in 1847, where he practiced law with Henderson Yoakum and became a good friend of Sam Houston (Branch was the executor of Houston's will.) A unionist Democrat, he was elected district attorney for the Seventh Judicial District in 1850.
He served in the Texas House in 1859 and in the state Senate in 1861. He resigned from the Senate when the war began, and he joined the Confederate provisional army where he was made captain of the 21 st Texas Cavalry. In August 1863, he was elected from the Third District of Texas to the second Confederate House, where he served for the rest of the war.
When the Richmond government surrendered Branch returned to Texas. After the war, the federal authorities denied him the seat in the United Sates House to which he had been elected in 1866. He subsequently practiced law in Huntsville, Texas.
