(In Voices from the Set, Tony Macklin shares with his read...)
In Voices from the Set, Tony Macklin shares with his readers the interviews he conducted during the 1970s with many of Hollywood's greatest stars. Because it was an era where the Old Hollywood was still extant, and the new cinema was burgeoning, he was able to meet the old with the new - actors, directors, producers, writers - and make some of his own memories along the way. Interviews with old masters Alfred Hitchcock and Howard Hawks are juxtaposed with the new breed Martin Scorsese and Alan Rudolph and the mavericks Robert Altman and Sam Peckinpah. Icons such as John Wayne and Edith Head are included, as well as relative newcomers Stockard Channing and Richard Baskin. Voices from the Set is a unique vignette of Hollywood history, a snapshot in time, ideal for the film buff, film historian, for anyone with an interest in the intriguing personalities that made it what it is today. Robert Welkos, writing in the Los Angeles Times Calendar, noted, “The book is certain to be a feast for film buffs.”

2000When Anthony writes things he wants it to be his best every time. It keeps him vital and perceptive. His reviews have something that only is in his review. It’s very seldom that Tony gets surprised by a storyline or an ending. His most successful fiction often is satiric; for example, poking fun at William Buckley or the game of baseball or the media. One of the best influences on Anthony as a film critic and writer of fiction was James Agee.
Quotations:
“I came along at the perfect time for films, the 1970s. It was the golden age of cinema. Frank Capra, Francis Ford Coppola, Alfred Hitchcock, Ingmar Bergman...those creators helped the beginning of film be recognized as an art form.”
“What seemed to set me apart as an interviewer was that I was a good listener. I knew their work going in and people responded to that.”
“A reviewer tells what the audience thinks. A critic tells what he thinks.”
“My credo: In any form I use, I try to get people to see with new perceptions and understand more. I guess that's the educator in me - and the human being.”
Tony is a member of the Las Vegas Film Critics Society.
Anthony married Mary Ann Marvitz in September 1962 (they divorced in January 1985). He then married Judith Ann Baker on April 13, 1995. Macklin has two children: Stephen Anthony, Stacy Ann.
