Education

Orton graduated from Victoria University of Manchester with a Bachelor of Science degree (with honours) in 1959. He then received a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from the Institute of Education in London in 1960 and obtained his master's degree and a doctorate at the University of Leeds in 1970 and 1980, respectively.

Career

Orton started his career as a high school teacher in Colne Valley, West Yorkshire, England in 1960. He held that position for a decade until he went to Edge Hill College of Higher Education, where he worked as a senior lecturer from 1971 to 1974.

From 1974 to his retirement in 2001, Orton worked as a faculty member at the University of Leeds.
